    Medium: Digital drawing

Artist Statement: I was introduced to digital art when I was in middle school, while I have only just started to become comfortable with graphite and printmaking this year. No matter the medium, I like to play with layering of both processes and ideas throughout all of my artwork—shown by the layering of prints and embroidery in my traditional works, and the combination of layer opacity and overlay settings when working digitally. It’s interesting to see how different materials can work together, as well as the amount of experimentation that digital media allows for.

Artist Bio: Natalie is a junior at Metuchen High School. She has been drawing her whole life, and hopes to pursue a career in the arts. Outside of art, she loves to listen to music, play field hockey, read, and spend time with friends and family.

Artist Statement: I genuinely enjoy the use of color so much that it plays a large and integral part in my life. So when I was assigned to begin my series, the only option I wanted to do was an investigation on the relationship between humans and color, and how certain colors can accurately and correctly portray human emotion and self expression. I experimented with dynamic facial movements and unique situations along with bright and purposely eye catching colors so that they could help give meaning to the piece. As I worked throughout this series I noticed many patterns and I also noticed the constant theme of self awareness.

Artist Bio: Val is a Junior student at Metuchen High School. She enjoys playing guitar, watching animated films and projects, and organizing her vast closet and unique jewelry collection. She has a tortoiseshell cat who acts as if it is superior to everyone else. Val loves anything Batman related, and her absolute favorite holiday is Halloween.

Artist Statement: What is the relationship between humans and forests? I was first inspired by Aspen Trees in Wyoming’s Wind River Range, which have markings on them that look like human eyes. As I painted, I realized I wanted to investigate this question on spiritual and physical grounds. I focused on color and layering in this series to convey emotion and depth.

    Artist: Sam Morillo

    Size: 9” x 12”

Medium: Watercolor paper with pencil and painted with watercolor paint

Artist Statement: Within my works, I focus on the uncanny valley of animals; I draw animals that are not quite right, but also not quite wrong, either. I mixed different aspects of human culture with these animals; the idea of a purpose. A sense of purpose appears to have evolved in humans so that we can accomplish big things together—which may be why it's associated with better physical and mental health. The purpose is adaptive, in an evolutionary sense. It helps both individuals and the species to survive. The animals depicted in my pieces are searching for their purpose. Purpose can guide life decisions, influence behavior, shape goals, offer a sense of direction and create meaning. The animals have a conscience and are aware. They want to be more than just a creature for others’ entertainment. They wish to be free spirits to live as they please. True personal freedom is to live as you are, to do what you want, and to spend time with people you like. For many of us, true freedom is a distant dream. And these animals just want to reach this dream as soon as possible.

Artist Bio: Samantha is a 17 year old junior of Metuchen High School. She is fond of animals and the study of them. Their anatomy is very interesting to her. It reflects onto her art as well as putting her own spin on the style, mixing her own techniques to already existing creatures.
